Cat Breeds: Russian Blue

Russian Blue cats are a breed of cat which began in Russia. They are known as Russian Blue cats because of their silvery-blue fur coloring. These cats, while shy around unfamiliar persons, tend to be sociable and playful with the people who they do know well. They are occasionally called Archangel Blue cats. This is because these were brought to the Archangel Islands by sailors in the 1860′s. There are British Blues, which are completely unrelated to Russian Blue cats.

Russian Blue cats possess a number of distinguishing characteristics. The first, is clearly, its coloring and fur. The second is that they have penetrating green eyes. This is extremely rare in any other breeds and so provides Russian Blues a distinctive appearance. They are a short haired cat, however have a dual coat of fur. This gives them a thick, luscious coat. Another extremely distinctive trait is that their footpads are mauve, whilst most other breeds are grey. Their tails include very pale stripes on them. They are so pale, most people tend not to believe that they have any stripes.

Russian Blue cats are not susceptible to any disease or injury, and are likely to live between 10 and fifteen years of age. A Russian Blue litter might have between one to six cats, but generally will have between 2 and 4.

In the 1970′s, another breed was made from the Russian Blue that is pure white. This breed is called the Russian White it is recognized in several competitions.

The cats are quite gentle and also playful. These are shy around unfamiliar persons. They love routine more than the majority of cats do as well as hate change more than the majority of cats do.
